The Art of Being an Amateur Presenter: Embracing Authenticity Over Perfection

I was always very excited during all the presentations I gave, some of them were at the UN, some of them in different parliaments, and some of them to investors, and executives.

In a world where polished, professional presentations are the gold standard, there’s a unique charm and power in the “amateur presenter.” But let’s clarify what we mean by amateur. This isn’t about the unprepared professional. Rather, it’s about the passionate individual, untrained but burning with something to say.

Here’s the twist: Don’t set yourself up for a ‘fail.’ Instead, seize this opportunity to share your light and vision. Avoid becoming a slightly prepared, wannabe professional presenter. After all, half-hearted efforts in any field, be it playing the violin or hockey, rarely lead to success.

Sure, you might land a few well-timed punchlines or have a clever slide design. But more often than not, it’s not about the technical perfection of your presentation.

Embrace the Essence of Being an Amateur Presenter

1. Have Something to Say: If there’s no story, no change you’re burning to share, it’s better to pass on the opportunity. But if there is, focus on what that might be. Simply getting through your presentation isn’t a goal worth pursuing.

2. Don’t Be Sorry: Being nervous or inexperienced is part of the amateur charm. Don’t apologize for it. Embrace it as a sign of your sincerity and passion.

3. Find Your Champion, Even If It’s Just One Person: Focus on one person in the room who you think would resonate most with your message. Speak to them. This isn’t about projecting your voice to fill the room, it’s about making a connection.

4. Storytelling Over Memorizing: You’ve been telling stories all your life. Trust in that innate ability. Don’t read from a script or memorize your speech. Let your natural storytelling rhythm guide you.

5. This Isn’t a Performance: Remember, this is not a professional performance. It’s an opportunity for genuine sharing and interaction. Professionals perform because it’s their job. Your job is simply to be you and share your vision.

The Human Touch in Presentations

Think about the most impactful interactions in your life. None of them were professional speeches. They were authentic human interactions that made a difference, not because of a script, but because of genuine care.

The real challenge isn’t about becoming a decent professional presenter. It’s about becoming the most authentic version of yourself. It’s undoubtedly scary, but the response to this fear isn’t to hide behind memorization. It’s about showing up, being present, and being authentically you.

In conclusion, the next time you find yourself in the role of an amateur presenter, remember: it’s not about how perfectly you deliver your message, but about the honesty and passion with which you share it. Authenticity resonates louder than perfection. So go ahead, be an amateur, be yourself, and watch as you connect with your audience in ways no professional presenter could.
