To the crazy ones
It’s hard to imagine now, but in 1997, Apple was nearly bankrupt.
Their computers weren’t seen as “serious computing machines” and the PC was gobbling up more market share every day.
In response, Apple launched the now famous “Think Different” campaign. At the center of the campaign was their TV spot, “The Crazy Ones.” Actor Richard Dreyfus provided the memorable voiceover:
Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently…
They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo.
You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.
Because they change things.
They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.
The campaign is largely credited for sparking Apple’s re-emergence.
I’ve thought a lot about what made that campaign so successful.
More than the brand, more than the product, more than any other factor, the message resonated with so many because we want to see ourselves as the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers.
Deep down, we all know we’re meant for more.
But the sad reality is most people won’t heed that call. Going against the grain can be hard, scary, and lonely.
We’re told from an early age to not cause a ruckus, to color inside the lines, and do what we can to fit in.
So we take the safe route, day after day, year after year, shushing the voice inside that begs us to be brave.
